Somalia officially reopened its embassy in London after a 32-year hiatus.

The embassy, based in Winchester House on Old Marylebone Road in central London, will provide consular services to approximately 500,000 people in the UK who are eligible for Somali citizenship.

The opening ceremony was attended by Somali Ambassador to the UK, Abdikadir Ahmed Khyer Abdi, as well as prominent British Somalis including four-time Olympic champion Sir Mohamed Farah (Mo Farah) and Antikhat activist Abubakar Awale.

Nearly two dozen British Somalis attended the ceremony, which also included Somali-Canadian model and climate activist Sabrina Dhowre as a special guest.

The ambassador said the reopening of the embassy was a positive step in strengthening Britain-Somalia ties.

The embassy assists Somali nationals living, working or traveling in the UK with consular services and organizes cultural and other media events.
