Kenya’s green transport sector took a significant leap forward as a Nairobi-based company unveiled an innovative charging station exclusively designed for electric motorbikes, catering to the needs of the country’s boda-boda riders.

The newly launched station promises to charge batteries to 80% capacity within an hour, providing a convenient and affordable solution.

The charging process at the “Roam Hub” is straightforward. Riders bring their own batteries to the station, where they are swiftly recharged.

Habib Cyril, the Roam Project Manager, explained, “We are able to charge from 20 to 80% in less than an hour at a very affordable fee. Our target cost is to spend less than 150 shillings, or approximately one USD, for a fully charged battery, allowing riders to cover a distance of around 80 kilometers.”

This groundbreaking initiative aligns with Kenya’s efforts to decarbonize its transportation sector, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional motorcycles.

Cyril firmly believes that electric mobility is the future, especially for low-income earners like boda-boda riders. He stated, “E-mobility will be much cheaper and ease the burden on individuals. Charging an electric motorbike will cost significantly less than fueling an Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) bike. Basically, the future is electric.”

The unveiling of the Roam Hub comes at a time when Kenya is experiencing a decline in inflation. Last month, inflation dropped to just under 8% from a previous high of 9.2% in March.

The introduction of cost-effective e-mobility solutions like the Roam Hub will likely contribute to further economic stability and provide sustainable transportation options for the country’s population.
