Nigerian music icon Wizkid has made a groundbreaking announcement, signaling his departure from the Afrobeats genre with the unveiling of his latest project, the ‘Morayo’ album. This upcoming release holds special significance as it serves as a heartfelt tribute to his late mother, Jane Dolapo Balogun, who passed away in August 2023.

Renowned for his chart-topping hits and magnetic stage presence, Wizkid, whose real name is Ayo Balogun, has captivated audiences worldwide with his distinctive sound. However, he now promises a departure from the familiar rhythms of Afrobeats, marking a significant evolution in his musical journey.

The ‘Essence’ crooner, whose international breakthrough came with the smash hit ‘Ojuelegba,’ has consistently delighted fans with memorable tracks such as “Hola at Your Boy” and “Pakurumo.” However, he challenges listeners to embrace the evolution of his sound, urging them to remove him from their playlists if they expect the same style of music.

I’m not Afro anything.” This bold declaration has sparked passionate debates on social media, with fans and critics alike weighing in on the significance of genre boundaries in the music industry.

Wizkid’s decision to distance himself from the Afrobeats label mirrors a broader trend among Nigerian artists, with fellow superstar Burna Boy preferring the term “Afro-fusion” to describe his music. As anticipation mounts for the release of ‘Morayo,’ fans eagerly await Wizkid’s latest artistic offering, recognizing his right to evolve creatively.

WizkidWhile discussions about genre classifications continue to unfold on social media platforms, one thing remains certain: Wizkid’s musical journey has been characterized by innovation and growth.

Whether you’re a dedicated Afrobeats enthusiast or a music lover with an open mind, the forthcoming ‘Morayo’ album promises to be a testament to Wizkid’s artistic versatility and enduring appeal.
