‘A Contemptuous Attitude Towards Africa and Africans’: African Nations Fire Back At French President Over ‘Ingratitude’ Remarks

A wave of diplomatic backlash has emerged across Africa following French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent remarks accusing African leaders of failing to express gratitude for France’s anti-terrorism efforts in the Sahel. Macron’s comments, delivered during a Conference of Ambassadors in Paris, have ignited sharp criticism and strained relations between France and several African nations.

Chad and Senegal have issued sharp responses to the French President. According to these nations, The statements made by Macron, is a dismissal of African sovereignty.

Chad’s Foreign Minister, Abderaman Koulamallah, condemned Macron’s comments as reflecting disdain for the continent. “Chad expresses its deep concern following the remarks made recently by the French president, which reflect a contemptuous attitude towards Africa and Africans,” Koulamallah stated in a televised address. He emphasized the need for French leaders to “respect the African people and recognize the value of their sacrifices.”

Similarly, Senegal’s Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, highlighted France’s historical role in destabilizing parts of Africa, particularly citing the intervention in Libya as having had “disastrous consequences” for the region’s security. Sonko questioned France’s legitimacy in leading African security efforts, asserting, “France has neither the capacity nor the legitimacy to ensure Africa’s security and sovereignty.”

The French president highlighted France’s military interventions in the region, suggesting that African nations had “forgotten to thank France” for its contributions to combating terrorism. These remarks were swiftly rejected by numerous African governments, who viewed them as dismissive and undermining their sovereignty.

In a pointed response, several African leaders emphasized that their countries have made significant sacrifices and investments in regional security, often with limited international support. They underscored their commitment to countering terrorism within their borders and highlighted the importance of mutual respect in diplomatic engagements.

Macron’s comments also arrive at a time when relations between France and its former colonies in Africa are increasingly fraught. In recent years, several Sahel nations have called for the withdrawal of French troops, citing dissatisfaction with the outcomes of France’s military operations. This incident further underscores the growing tension in Franco-African relations, as many African countries seek to redefine their partnerships on more equal terms.

The controversy has sparked broader conversations about the dynamics of international cooperation in Africa, with calls for greater recognition of African nations’ agency in addressing their own security challenges. It remains to be seen how this diplomatic row will affect France’s influence in the region.
