Popular Nigerian transgender celebrity Bobrisky, also known as Idris Okuneye, has been sentenced to six months in jail after pleading guilty to abusing the nation’s banknotes. The ruling, delivered by a judge, stipulated that Bobrisky must serve her sentence in a male prison, sparking controversy and raising questions about transgender rights in Nigeria.
The incident stemmed from Bobrisky’s participation in a film premiere in Lagos, during which she allegedly “sprayed” naira notes, a common practice in Nigerian culture where individuals throw money in the air to show appreciation or honor. However, the act is technically deemed an offense as it results in the notes being walked on when they land on the ground.
Although individuals can face up to six months in jail for such offenses, prosecutions are rare. Bobrisky’s case marks a notable exception, as she was not only sentenced to prison but also faced the stigma of being held in a male facility.

Bobrisky claimed ignorance of the prohibition against “spraying” and could have faced a fine instead of jail time. The decision to incarcerate her has ignited debate over the treatment of the LGBTQ community in Nigeria, which often faces harassment and discrimination, according to rights groups.
This case follows a similar incident involving a cis-gender, heterosexual actress, Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin, who was also punished for banknote abuse in February. Reports suggest that Bobrisky’s arrest and prosecution were prompted by videos of the film premiere circulating on social media.
Bobrisky, a prominent figure with over five million Instagram followers, describes herself as an entertainer, social media star, and brand influencer. Her conviction highlights the challenges faced by transgender individuals in Nigeria and underscores the ongoing struggle for LGBTQ rights in the country.
