At least 20 people have been killed and 68 injured in a collision between a passenger bus and an armored personnel carrier in South Africa’s northern Limpopo province, officials said.

The two cars collided head-on on the N1 road in Makhado district on Monday evening, according to paramedics attending the accident.

The bus is said to have slid down a slope into a river and some passengers were found trapped underneath.

“Most of those killed downstream were trapped under the bus,” Campbell said.

He said another person died after being taken to hospital. He added that the other wounded were treated at the scene and some were taken to nearby health facilities for further care.

While exact details about the collision are unknown, Campbell said it had been raining heavily in the area.

Campbell said police investigators were still at the scene as of Tuesday morning.
