Time Out, the global authority on city life and travel, has unveiled its much-anticipated list of the world’s 50 best cities for 2025, with Cape Town, South Africa, claiming the top spot. Known for its breathtaking landscapes, vibrant culture, and rich history, Cape Town outshined its global counterparts in a survey that assessed everything from food and nightlife to affordability and overall city vibe.

“Where else can you visit a colony of African penguins, taste world-class wines, stroll Blue Flag beaches, enjoy views from one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature, and experience vibrant nightlife—all in a day?” Time Out rhetorically asked in its glowing assessment of the city.

Cape Town scored highly across multiple criteria, including liveability, accessibility to nature, and affordability. The city’s blend of historical depth and modern attractions captivated respondents and experts alike.

Time Out highlighted hotspots such as Kalk Bay for its fishing culture and the East City for a taste of Capetonian food and design. For those seeking outdoor adventures, the publication recommended the Cape Point Nature Reserve, known for its dramatic cliffs and unique biodiversity.

“Cape Town offers visitors a chance to learn, explore, and unwind, all without breaking the bank,” noted Time Out, emphasizing the city’s appeal to both locals and tourists.

Time Out’s ranking is based on an extensive survey involving over 18,500 city dwellers and insights from a panel of 100 travel experts. The survey evaluated cities across 44 criteria, focusing on aspects that resonate with modern travelers, including food, culture, nightlife, and affordability.

“This year, we prioritized liveability, which includes affordability and access to nature,” explained Grace Beard, Time Out’s travel editor. “This list showcases the most exciting cities to visit in 2025 while reflecting the places where locals feel most at home.”

Cape Town wasn’t the only city to shine. Coming in second place was Bangkok, Thailand, praised for its rich culture, iconic sites like Wat Arun, and its famously vibrant food scene. With affordable dining and an expanded public transport network, Bangkok remains a traveler favorite.

Last year’s winner, New York City, slipped to third place but retained its reputation for excitement, culture, and iconic attractions. Melbourne, Australia, secured fourth place, celebrated for its culinary scene and arts, while London rounded out the top five, with its diverse communities and world-class shopping earning high marks.

The top 10 included New Orleans, Mexico City, Porto, Shanghai, and Copenhagen. Among U.S. cities, Chicago ranked 11th, and Los Angeles landed at the 40th spot.

Cape Town’s win is a testament to its enduring charm and global relevance. Its combination of natural wonders, cultural richness, and modern amenities continues to make it a standout destination. As Time Out’s editors put it, “Cape Town is not just a city to visit; it’s a city to experience and savor.”

For those planning their 2025 travel, Cape Town is clearly the ultimate urban escape. Whether you’re drawn to its stunning vistas, dynamic nightlife, or warm hospitality, this South African gem promises an unforgettable journey.
