In a poignant display of faith and tradition, Ethiopian Orthodox Christians marked Palm Sunday with solemn prayers and vibrant ceremonies at the majestic Entoto Maryam Church, situated just outside the bustling city of Addis Ababa.

Palm Sunday, a cherished occasion among Orthodox Christians worldwide, signifies the commencement of Holy Week and commemorates the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem. While many across the globe observed this significant day weeks ago, Ethiopian Orthodox Christians maintain their unique calendar, observing Palm Sunday at a distinct time.

The devout faithful commenced their annual Palm Sunday observance before the break of dawn, gathering at the revered Entoto Maryam Church to partake in the sacred rituals. Led by priests and deacons, worshippers engaged in fervent prayers, seeking divine blessings and guidance as they embarked on the spiritual journey of Holy Week.

Amidst the solemnity of the occasion, a symbol of profound significance emerged – an ornately adorned horse, representing Jesus’ humble entry into Jerusalem on a donkey. Accompanied by children laying down white garments in its path, the horse served as a poignant reminder of the biblical narrative, adding a touch of reverence to the proceedings.

Among the worshippers was Mihret Yospeh, who echoed the collective aspirations of the faithful, calling for “peace, health, and joy” as she immersed herself in the solemn festivities. Expressing hopes for a future filled with divine grace and national harmony, Yospeh’s sentiments encapsulated the fervent prayers and aspirations of the Ethiopian Orthodox community.Palm sunday

While their observance may diverge from the global timeline, the essence of their celebration remains steadfast – a testament to the enduring resilience of faith and tradition in the heart of Ethiopia.
