Guinea Military President, Mamady Doumbouya, Forgives Players for Afcon Exit, demands Part refund of money spent on the Country’s national team.
The military President of Guinea Conakry, Colonel Mamady Doumbouya has reportedly forgiven the National team after they dropped out of the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon against the earlier agreement he had with them before they took off. However, despite the “forgiveness” the president wants a part refund of the money spent on the team.
Earlier on, before the team departed to Cameroon for the tournament; the National Elephants held a tight meeting with the president, where he gave them his final words. Colonel Doumbouya had told them to win or refund the state funds.
His statements were short. “The cup, or you reimburse the money that’s been invested in you,” the Guinean President told the players, as quoted by African Insider. The post was shared many times because of the personality of the leader and the context.Doumbouya was just done unsitting a President from power, and as such, many believed he would actually enforce the directive. Then, when the team failed to qualify for the round of 16 with a 2-1 defeat to Zimbabwe at Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo, many post were made mockingly advising the players; especially those who play their club footballs abroad to just travel from Cameroon without returning to Guinea. However, upon return the situation as expected was a bit easier. According to reports, Doumbouya congratulated the team for their performance. He also told them that, the earlier tough statement was just to push them to strive harder. However, the President said the funds allocated to the team should be partially refunded. According to him, the money given to the team covered; Quarterfinals, Semi-final and final games and that must be returned to the state coffers as soon as possible.
