Lewis Hamilton has called on Formula 1 to end its long-standing neglect of Africa as discussions continue about the possibility of a grand prix in Rwanda. Hamilton emphasized the need for the sport to expand to the African continent, which has not hosted an F1 race since the 1993 South African Grand Prix.

In a recent interview at the Dutch Grand Prix, the seven-time world champion expressed his belief that Africa’s exclusion from the F1 calendar is unacceptable, particularly in light of the continent’s beauty and untapped potential. “We can’t keep adding races in other regions while Africa remains overlooked. The world takes so much from Africa, but nothing is given back,” Hamilton stated.

Recent reports confirm that Formula 1 executives have scheduled a meeting with Rwandan representatives in September to discuss the logistics of hosting a race in the East African country. Rwanda has shown growing enthusiasm for motorsports, with its officials meeting with the FIA at the Monaco Grand Prix earlier this year and planning to host the FIA’s Annual General Assembly in Kigali this December.

While critics have pointed to the lack of a suitable racing circuit in Africa, Hamilton was quick to dismiss this argument. “There’s at least one track ready to go, and we could immediately incorporate it into the calendar while working on building more infrastructure for the future,” he argued.

Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali confirmed the seriousness of Rwanda’s intentions, noting that the country has presented a promising plan for a permanent track. “We want to be in Africa, but it requires the right investment and a solid strategic approach,” Domenicali explained.

Hamilton has been personally involved in exploring opportunities for a race in Africa, speaking with stakeholders in both Rwanda and South Africa. He described Rwanda as one of his favorite destinations, sharing that he has been in talks with local figures and motorsport enthusiasts in the country. However, he noted that bringing a race to Rwanda is a long-term project.

The British driver also shared insights from his recent visit to Africa, where he spent time in Senegal visiting refugee camps. Reflecting on the experience, he said, “Seeing firsthand the struggles that displaced families face was eye-opening. It’s one thing to hear about it, but speaking to kids who walk miles just to attend school really hits differently.”

Hamilton’s advocacy for an African grand prix shows his broader commitment to social issues, as he continues to use his platform to drive change both within and beyond the world of motorsport.
