How To Prepare Egyptian Koshari

Africa is blessed with delicious and healthy meals. We have tasted hundreds of meals across the continent and can’t forget the taste of this meal. Egyptian Koshari is a popular meal you need to taste if you are in Egypt. Thankfully, you don’t have to travel to the ‘Land of Pharaohs’ before you can taste this yummy dish. The food consists of pasta, rice, and lentils that are cooked and presented in a tomato sauce.

We have listed the ingredients to make this special meal:

  • 3/4 cup brown lentils
  • 1 cup elbow macaroni
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 4 cups water
  • 3/4 cup uncooked long grain rice
  • 4 cups water
  • 3/4 cup uncooked long grain rice
  • 2 large onions
  • Chopped 4 cloves garlic
  • minced1 (15.5 ounce) can diced tomatoes
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes, or to taste salt and pepper to taste

To prepare Egyptian Koshari doesn’t take time. You don’t need to be a professional chef before you can make this meal.  For those of us who reside in other countries, the meal can be a special treat to your family or guests.

Preparation:

  • Pick a large saucepan and combine the lentils and water.  Boil the mixture and allow to simmer for about 25 minutes.
  • The heat should be medium. Rice should be added to the lentils and still simmer for an extra 20 minutes. Stop when the rice is tender.
  • The next step is to fill another saucepan with salted water . Boil and add your macaroni. The mixture is cooked for about 8 minutes until it is tender.
  • Drain the macaroni.
  • The vegetable is heated in a skillet and the heat should be medium. Add your garlic and onion; cook and stir.
  • Stop when the onion changes colour to light brown. Tomatoes, salt, pepper and red pepper flakes are added.
  • Over medium heat, simmer for about 15 minutes.
  • Get a serving dish and stir together the macaroni, rice and lentils. Mix your tomato sauce and stop when the dish is coated evenly.
