Ten prison guards at a correctional facility in Reggio Emilia, Italy, have been charged with torturing and beating a detainee of Tunisian origin, according to local authorities.
The guards were relieved of their duties after being accused of torture, bodily harm to a detainee, and concealing the facts, as stated by the local prosecutor’s office.
The investigation into the incident began after a complaint was filed by the detainee, a man of Tunisian origin, who reported the events that took place on April 3.
According to prosecutor Gaetano Calogero Paci, the detainee was forced to lie on the ground with his head covered by a pillowcase. He was then subjected to severe beatings, including kicks and punches to his face and body.

Following the brutal assault, the detainee was placed in solitary confinement, where he resorted to self-harm by breaking a sink and using a fragment to lacerate himself. This desperate act ultimately prompted the arrival of a doctor, as reported by local media sources.
The identification of the suspects was made possible through the assistance of CCTV footage, which played a crucial role in uncovering the alleged acts of abuse committed by the prison guards.
The charges against the ten guards highlight a disturbing case of mistreatment and violence within the correctional facility. The legal proceedings will be closely monitored to ensure that justice is served and to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
