In a bid to alleviate the financial burden faced by civil servants, the Kenyan government has approved a proposal to increase the salaries of lower cadre government employees by 7-10%.
President William Ruto made the announcement during the launch of digital government services at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) on Friday. The salary increment will take effect from July 1, 2023.
President Ruto emphasized that the decision was made in response to the challenging economic conditions currently experienced in the country.
The salary adjustment aims to provide relief and support to the affected workers. The increment will be applicable to government employees below the level of a Principal Secretary, as well as teachers, police officers, and military personnel.

While addressing the issue, President Ruto acknowledged the proposal put forth by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to raise the salaries of various cadres of civil and public servants.
However, he declined the suggestion to increase the salaries of senior civil servants, including himself, the Deputy President, Cabinet Secretaries, and Members of Parliament, by an average of 14%.
The proposed pay rise would have also benefited other state officers, such as Principal Secretaries, Speakers of the National Assembly and Senate, Leaders of Majority and Minority, Chief Justice, Judges, Magistrates, Governors, Chairpersons of Constitutional Commissions, and Independent Offices.
By approving the salary increment for lower cadre civil servants, the government aims to address the financial challenges faced by these employees and provide them with a measure of relief during these difficult economic times.
