Kenya has taken a significant step in facilitating easier travel into its borders by waiving the visa registration fee for citizens from six African nations. This move comes as a response to frustrations expressed by some countries regarding the high charges required for online registration.
According to a report by the East African media agency, citizens from Ethiopia, Comoros, Congo-Brazzaville, Eritrea, Mozambique, San Marino, and South Africa will no longer need to pay the $30 online application fee when registering to visit Kenya.
“We kindly inform our citizens that they can enter Kenya without any requirement for visa and its related payment, but the requirement to fill eTA form online before arrival remains mandatory,” stated Bacha Debele, the Ethiopian Ambassador to Kenya, expressing gratitude for the decision.

The exemption from the $30 fee is a direct response to criticisms of the system, particularly from nations that do not typically require visas from Kenyans. This move aligns with Kenya’s initiative to streamline travel processes and enhance regional cooperation.
In January 2023, Kenyan officials announced plans to update regional travel policies within the next six months. Additionally, a six-month grace period has been provided for other members of the East African Community to decide on their approach to travel to Kenya, ensuring the successful implementation of the new simplified travel policy.
This waiver of the visa registration fee marks a significant step towards promoting intra-African travel and fostering closer ties between Kenya and its neighboring countries.
