Senegal President Macky Sall has officially declared that he will not seek a third term in the upcoming 2024 elections, putting an end to speculations that have caused unrest and instability in the country.
In a televised speech on Monday, President Sall emphasized his commitment to democratic principles and expressed his deep respect for the Senegalese people.
The possibility of President Sall extending his stay in power had ignited widespread protests and violent clashes since 2021, resulting in numerous casualties.
This unrest had cast doubt on Senegal’s reputation as a stable democracy in West Africa. However, the president’s announcement brings a sense of relief and renewed hope for a peaceful transition of power.

The recent wave of protests was triggered by the imprisonment of prominent opposition leader Ousmane Sonko, who was sentenced to two years in jail on charges related to an alleged rape.
Sonko vehemently denies these allegations and claims they were politically motivated to prevent him from participating in the upcoming elections. He had called upon his supporters to be prepared for further street demonstrations if President Sall had chosen to pursue a third term.
With President Sall’s commitment to respect the two-term limit, Senegal can now focus on preparing for a fair and transparent electoral process in 2024.
The announcement paves the way for new political dynamics and offers an opportunity for fresh candidates to emerge and compete for the presidency. The nation eagerly awaits the upcoming elections as it navigates the path towards a peaceful and democratic future.
