Rabat witnessed a historic moment as Morocco triumphed in the first-ever African breakdancing championships on Saturday, paving the way for the country’s representation at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The competition witnessed Moroccans dominating both the women’s and men’s categories, securing gold medals and two coveted spots at the prestigious international event.
In an electrifying showdown, B-Boys Billy and Tawfiq battled it out in the men’s final, with Bilal Mallakhaka emerging as the victor.
Reflecting on his victory, B-Boy Billy expressed his elation, stating, “Today I won the African breakdance championship which leads me to represent Africa at the Olympic Games in Paris. I will work hard for a better representation of Africa.”

In the women’s division, Fatima Zahra El Mamouny, known as B-Girl Elmamouny, showcased her exceptional skills, outshining South African Midian Leah to claim the title.
The World Dance Sport Federation (WDSF) Secretary General, Sergei Nifontov, hailed the momentous occasion, emphasizing its significance as the first continental championship in Africa.
He further explained that this being a pre-Olympic year, and considering the qualification system, two quarter places would be awarded to Paris through this event.
Breakdancing, also known as “breaking,” emerged as one of the four new disciplines to be included in the 2024 Olympic Games, alongside climbing, surfing, and skateboarding. Originating in New York in the 1970s, this urban dance style has evolved into a global phenomenon, captivating enthusiasts worldwide.
Morocco’s triumph in the African breakdancing championships not only celebrates their exceptional talent but also highlights the growing prominence and inclusivity of urban dance on the world’s grandest sporting stage.
