The second half saw Nigeria adopt a brilliant counter-attacking strategy, which proved fruitful. Osinachi Ohale’s well-taken goal in the 65th minute gave the Super Falcons the lead they were seeking. Substitute Asisat Oshoala sealed the deal with another goal in the 72nd minute, sending the Nigerian supporters into a jubilant frenzy.

Australia fought back valiantly and managed to pull one back through Alanna Kennedy’s header in the dying moments of added time. However, it wasn’t sufficient to alter the outcome, and Nigeria secured their first victory of the tournament, deserving the top spot in Group B.

With this crucial win, Nigeria now sits atop the group standings on four points, edging past Canada on goal difference. The host nation, Australia, finds themselves in a precarious situation and must defeat Canada in their upcoming match in Melbourne to keep their World Cup dreams alive.

Nigeria’s impressive display against Australia will surely boost their confidence as they look forward to their final group match against the already eliminated Republic of Ireland. A victory in that match will guarantee their spot in the last 16, leaving the Super Falcons eager to continue their journey in the prestigious tournament.
