Nigeria commemorates Democracy Day on June 12, with President Bola Tinubu delivering a poignant speech that honored the late Moshood Abiola (MKO) on the anniversary of the annulled June 12, 1993, presidential election.

President Tinubu lauded Abiola for his unwavering commitment to his mandate, even at the cost of his life while in military detention. He emphasized Abiola’s role as a steadfast guardian of democratic ideals and acknowledged his sacrifice and martyrdom.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari had previously declared June 12 as Nigeria’s Democracy Day, and today, the nation posthumously awarded Abiola with its highest honor.

In his address, President Tinubu acknowledged the challenges faced by Nigerians following the recent removal of fuel subsidies. However, he assured the citizens that their sacrifices would not go unnoticed.

The President pledged to channel resources into significant investments in transportation infrastructure, education, regular power supply, healthcare, and other crucial public utilities. These initiatives aim to elevate the overall quality of life for all Nigerians.

The decision to remove the petrol subsidy, announced by President Tinubu during his May 29, 2023, inauguration, resulted in a nationwide increase in fuel prices.

Although the subsidy had been a source of benefits for many Nigerians, it had also placed a substantial burden on public finances.

President Tinubu’s administration seeks to redirect these saved resources toward vital sectors that will ultimately benefit the Nigerian people.

On this historic June 12, Nigeria reflects on the struggle for democracy and the enduring legacy of Moshood Abiola.
