A Nigerian man, Yahaya Nafiu, is calling for financial assistance after his 54-year-old wife, Latoyossi Alake, gave birth to an astonishing 11 babies. Nafiu, a 56-year-old Islamic cleric from Ilorin, Kwara State, shared that the births took place in a traditional home in Porto-Novo, Benin Republic.
Alake’s deliveries occurred in two stages: the first set of six babies arrived on August 7, while the second set of five followed on August 14. Tragically, two of the three girls in the group passed away during delivery, leaving the couple with nine surviving babies—eight boys and one girl.
Nafiu explained that the pregnancy lasted over three years, a highly unusual duration, before the first set of babies was born. “A few days after the delivery of the first set, my wife felt strange movements in her stomach again,” he said. A subsequent scan revealed that Alake was carrying another set of babies. Following this discovery, the couple returned to the traditional birth attendant who assisted with the second delivery.

The cleric is now urgently seeking help to cover the costs associated with the birth, including medical bills and other essential expenses. Nafiu also noted that they need financial support to complete the marriage rites before they can take the children back to Ilorin to present them to his parents.
This extraordinary birth has drawn attention in Ilorin, where residents recall a similar event from nearly a century ago. Abdulmumini Abdulmalik, the national president of the Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union, recounted how, shortly after World War I, a woman in Ilorin made history by giving birth to ten babies at once.
The Nafiu family’s plea for assistance is a stark reminder of the challenges that can accompany such rare and miraculous births. The couple is now hoping for the community’s support to ensure the well-being of their nine surviving children and their mother.
