Oye Owolewa has successfully secured a second term as Washington, D.C.’s shadow representative, according to the Associated Press. The Democratic incumbent, who initially took office in 2021, emerged victorious in the November 5 election, defeating his Republican opponent Ciprian Ivanof.

Owolewa, a licensed pharmacist and dedicated advocate for D.C. statehood, based his campaign on advancing the District’s pursuit of full voting representation in Congress—a goal he considers central to the region’s quest for equality. His campaign also highlighted his commitment to expanding access to healthcare, reflecting his professional background as a pharmacy manager.

Originally from Boston, Owolewa holds a doctorate in pharmacy from Northeastern University. His victory in June’s Democratic primary helped secure his path to this re-election, allowing him to continue representing the interests of D.C. residents on a national platform.

As Owolewa embarks on his second term, his re-election signals ongoing support for the Democratic vision of D.C. statehood and voting rights, a cause he has worked tirelessly for since entering office. With the support of D.C. residents behind him, Owolewa remains a vocal figure in the push for representation and aims to use his role to bring continued attention to this long-standing issue.
