Nigerian filmmaker, Charles Okpaleke has announced his latest project, a movie titled “Ekwumekwu” which is set to explore the British opposition of the Igbo tribe.
Okpaleke, who is renowned for his award-winning productions, will develop the movie in partnership with his theatrical production company, Play Network Studios.
“Ekwumekwu” is set to be an epic tale of struggle and resilience, as it delves into the history of the Igbo tribe and their opposition to British colonial rule.

The movie will be set in the early 20th century and will depict the British attempts to dominate the Igbo people and their resistance against it.
The story will be told through the eyes of a group of Igbo warriors, who, despite facing impossible odds, fight to preserve their heritage and culture.

Speaking about the upcoming movie, Okpaleke expressed his excitement at the opportunity to tell such an important story. “I took a personal interest in this story because of the role the Aro people played with the people of Anioma to protect the Igbo land.”
“I am from Arondizogu, the largest settlement of the Aro people (believed to have migrated from Arochukwu), and ever since we started making feature films our focus has been centered around retelling our African history,” he said.
Okpaleke is no stranger to telling important stories on the big screen. He has produced a number of critically acclaimed movies including “Living in Bondage: Breaking Free”, “Rattlesnake: The Ahanna Story” and “Nneka the Pretty Serpent”.
His productions have won numerous awards and have been praised for their compelling storylines and excellent production values.
“Ekwumekwu” is currently in pre-production and casting is underway. The movie is set to be filmed on location in Nigeria and the United Kingdom, and will feature a talented cast of actors from both countries.

Okpaleke has promised that the movie will be a visually stunning experience that will transport viewers back in time to a pivotal moment in Nigerian history.
