Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo De Sousa embarked on a state visit to South Africa, where he was warmly welcomed by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The visit coincided with Portugal’s National Day celebrations, and each year the Portuguese President visits a different country to commemorate the Day with the Portuguese diaspora.

South Africa, with approximately 500,000 individuals of Portuguese descent and 200,000 Portuguese nationals residing permanently, provided an ideal setting for this year’s celebration.

During the visit, President De Sousa and President Ramaphosa engaged in bilateral discussions, focusing on various areas of mutual interest.

The two leaders signed an agreement on Defence Cooperation, solidifying their commitment to enhancing collaboration in defense matters.

They also addressed the ongoing conflict in Mozambique, with Portugal emphasizing its cooperation with Mozambique to safeguard its territorial integrity against terrorist attacks in the northern region.

Moreover, the leaders explored opportunities for collaboration in science, innovation, education, and energy. Both countries recognized the potential for mutual benefits in these areas and expressed their willingness to foster greater cooperation.

President Ramaphosa, during a press conference, revealed that he and several other African heads of states had met the previous day to discuss their upcoming visits to Ukraine and Russia.
