Renowned Nigerian musician Seun Kuti, son of the legendary Afrobeat icon Fela Kuti, found himself in legal trouble on Monday as he was arrested for physically assaulting a police officer, according to authorities in Lagos state, Nigeria.
The incident unfolded after a video went viral on social media, capturing Seun Kuti shouting, pushing, and slapping a policeman on a road.
In response, the police had issued an arrest order, which culminated in Seun Kuti voluntarily presenting himself at the Lagos State Police Headquarters in Ikeja on Monday morning.
Accompanied by his lawyer and a family representative, the musician complied with the legal proceedings.

Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the arrest on his Twitter account, stating that it was carried out in accordance with the law. Hundeyin reassured the public that the investigation would be thorough, transparent, and conducted professionally.
Seun Kuti, a musical prodigy, followed in his father’s footsteps, joining Fela Kuti’s Egypt 80 band at the tender age of nine.
Following his father’s passing in 1997, Seun assumed leadership of the band at the age of 14. Throughout his career, he has utilized music as a powerful tool to denounce elite corruption, dictatorship, and the influence of multinational corporations.
In 2019, Seun Kuti and his band received a Grammy Award nomination in the Best World Music Album category for their album “Black Times,” solidifying his status as an influential figure in contemporary Nigerian and global music scenes.
