There was a time South Africa was not a friendly destination to visit. Gone are those days because the country has become one of the favourite of tourists.  South Africa suffered from apartheid that dragged the blacks through the mud of humiliation. Maybe, you are not aware of what happened during that era.

After the 1948 general election in South Africa, the National Party took over power in South Africa. The all white government then officially adopted a system of segregation called apartheid, which aimed at enforcing the previous racial segregation policies. Here are facts you didn’t know about apartheid.

1. Apartheid is a known word in the African region. It means separateness in the African language. There were lots of racist cases in the country that almost crippled the tourism industry.

2. It was a system of legal racial segregation enforced by the South African government between 1948 and 1994. In 1948, apartheid was considered as the official policy after the general election in that year.

3. The white people of South Africa ruled everything. Under the laws that came to be known to the world as apartheid, black people were not allowed to live near white people. They could not marry white people.

4. People were segregated into different groups: White, Black, Indian, and Colored. And this rapidly increased the rate of racism in South Africa.

5. In 1990, President de Klerk began negotiations to end apartheid. The election was won by African National Congress under Nelson Mandela in 1994. Nelson became a figure head of equality and when he died, he became one of the greatest men to ever live on planet earth. Today, you can see a lot of monuments left in the memories of Nelson.

6. The Apartheid touched every aspect of social life, including a prohibition of marriage between non-whites and whites, and the sanctioning of “white-only” jobs.  South Africa has become a business hub that attracts millions of investors from around the world. The shackles of not getting married to anyone you want to marry has been broken. You can fall in love with any race in South Africa and no one will stop you getting married.

7. South Africans were considered as the subordinate people in their own country. They did not have access to quality education. This is no longer the case in the country as both the white and black people are enjoying the benefit of great education. We are seeing an increase in the number of foreigners coming to live in the country.

The good news is that there is peace in South Africa with black presidents ruling the country. You are going to see the ugly marks that apartheid left in South Africa in form of prisons, landmarks and sculptures.

Come over to South Africa and have the best moments of your life. There are lots of things to learn about Apartheid and the reason why it was forcibly fought against by the locals, some won and some paid with their lives
