Authorities in Tanzania say they have arrested Thabo Bester, a South African national, and convicted killer known as a Facebook rapist.

Bester, 35, earned the nickname the Facebook Rapist for using the social media platform to meet a woman.

He was found guilty of murder for killing one of the women he met through the website and sentenced to life in prison.

Last year it was announced that he had died in a prison fire. But this year, news of Bester’s sightings reached South African authorities.

DNA analysis of the cremated body, believed to be his, revealed that the body belonged to someone else. Bester escaped from prison.

His escape raised questions about whether prison officials supported his escape.

He was convicted of the 2012 rape and murder of his model girlfriend, Nomfondo Tehulu. A year earlier he had been found guilty of the rape and robbery of two other women.

In May he was reportedly found dead in his cell, apparently having set himself on fire at Manjung Correctional Center in Bloemfontein.

However, local media began airing suspicions about Bester’s death late last year.

In March, police ordered an inquest into his alleged murder, and further investigation revealed the deceased was not Bester – and that the unidentified person had died from blunt force trauma to the head.

Staff from British security firm G4S, which ran the prison where he was being held, have been accused of helping him escape.

He said three employees were fired in connection with the incident.

Earlier this week, representatives of the organization failed to attend a meeting in Parliament about Bester’s escape. The BBC has contacted G4S for comment.

Several sightings of Bester have been reported over the past year, including claims that he was shopping and living in a rented villa in an affluent Johannesburg suburb.
