South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa embarks on a significant peace mission as he travels to Ukraine and Russia, aiming to facilitate a peaceful resolution to the conflict between the two countries.
The African Peace Mission, of which Ramaphosa is a member, seeks to promote diplomatic dialogue and stability in the region.
Before heading to Ukraine, President Ramaphosa made a courtesy visit to Poland, where he met with President Andrzej Duda. Poland shares borders with both Ukraine and Russia, making it a key player in the ongoing conflict.
In Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, President Ramaphosa is scheduled to engage in deliberations with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday.

The African Peace Mission will include leaders from South Africa, Zambia, Senegal, and the Comoros. Additionally, representatives from Congo Brazzaville and Egypt will be present, as reported by French media outlet Le Monde.
However, Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, who recently contracted COVID-19, will be unable to attend the meeting.
After the discussions in Kyiv, President Ramaphosa will proceed to St Petersburg, Russia, where the African delegation will engage with President Vladimir Putin on Saturday.
These high-level meetings aim to foster understanding and explore diplomatic solutions to the conflict.
President Ramaphosa is expected to return to South Africa on Sunday, marking the conclusion of his peace mission.
The international community will closely watch the outcomes of these meetings, hoping for progress towards a peaceful resolution in Ukraine and Russia.
