South Africa’s Tyla Shines with Triple Wins at 2024 MTV EMAs

South African rising star Tyla took center stage at the 2024 MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs) on Sunday in Manchester, England, securing three major wins and capturing the hearts of the audience with her electric performances. Tyla, known for her hit “Water,” won awards for Best Afrobeats, Best R&B, and Best African Act, marking a career-defining night at the Co-op Live arena.

In a thrilling performance of “Water,” Tyla was joined by an energetic dance crew, followed by a rendition of her latest track “Push 2 Start,” which brought fans to their feet. The “Truth or Dare” singer was also nominated for Best New Act, rounding out an impressive four nominations for the evening. Her wins highlight her growing influence in global music, especially as she continues to blend Afrobeats and R&B into her unique sound.

While Tyla was a standout, Taylor Swift claimed the night’s top honors, winning Best Artist, Best Live Act, Best US Act, and Best Video. Swift’s haul solidified her status as one of the evening’s biggest winners, but it was Tyla’s journey from newcomer to international star that resonated with many in attendance.

The ceremony, hosted by British singer Rita Ora, included a heartfelt tribute to One Direction member Liam Payne, who passed away in October after a tragic accident. Ora, who collaborated with Payne on the 2018 hit “For You (Fifty Shades Freed),” honored him in an emotional speech. “Liam Payne was one of the kindest people I knew,” she said, her voice breaking as she asked the audience to join her in a moment of remembrance. “He had the biggest heart and left such a mark on this world,” she added, visibly moved.

In another memorable moment, hip-hop legend Busta Rhymes was honored with the EMAs Global Icon Award, presented by British rapper Little Simz. Reflecting on his decades-long career, Rhymes shared with the crowd that this was his first MTV award in 34 years of professional recording. “This feels incredible,” he said, as the audience celebrated his legacy in music.

This year’s MTV EMAs celebrated artists from around the world, spotlighting both established icons and emerging talent. Tyla’s remarkable triple win signals a bright future, not only for her career but also for African artists rising to global prominence.
