British-Ghanaian rapper, author, and philanthropist Stormzy has received a second honorary doctorate—this time from the prestigious University of Cambridge—in recognition of his groundbreaking work supporting Black students in higher education.

At just 31, Stormzy, born Michael Ebenazer Kwadjo Omari Owuo Jr., has continued to break barriers beyond music. On Wednesday, he was awarded a Doctorate in Law for his #Merky Foundation’s scholarship initiative, which has helped 56 Black British students attend Cambridge with full tuition and maintenance support since its launch in 2018.

Speaking on his impact, Professor Deborah Prentice, Vice-Chancellor of the university, said:

The rapper was one of eight honorary graduates honored by Cambridge this year, a group that also included iconic figures like American civil rights activist Professor Angela Davis, actor Sir Simon Russell Beale, and Olympic gold medallist Dame Katherine Grainger.

Stormzy’s recognition by Cambridge is not just about academic sponsorship—it’s about a deeper cultural shift. His #Merky Books publishing imprint, developed in partnership with Penguin Random House, continues to spotlight Black British voices, while #Merky Films, his production company, recently debuted Big Man, a YouTube short that blends storytelling with community themes. The film was produced in collaboration with Apple, with Stormzy starring as the lead character, Tenzman.

His ventures also extend into sports, with his acquisition of AFC Croydon Athletic, a South London football club. The move wasn’t about prestige, it was about creating a “community asset”, a place where local youth can dream bigger and play better.Stormzy

This isn’t Stormzy’s first honorary degree. In 2022, the University of Exeter recognized him for his outstanding contributions to education and philanthropy, making this Cambridge award a second formal nod from Britain’s academic elite.

Though known globally for his music and powerful performances, Stormzy’s legacy is increasingly rooted in empowerment, access, and opportunity.

His journey—from a young Black artist navigating the UK grime scene to becoming a symbol of educational equity—continues to inspire. For many students across the UK, Stormzy isn’t just a chart-topper. He’s a door-opener.
