To ease the movement of people and goods, Tanzania plans to construct a bridge connecting the mainland to the Islands of Zanzibar.
This was revealed by Godfrey Kasekenya, the East African country’s Deputy Minister of Works and Transport, during a parliamentary session on Friday. If built, the 50km bridge would be the first of its kind in Africa.
Talks for the construction of the bridge began on March 11, 2023, and are currently in advanced stages.
M/S China Overseas Engineering Group Company (COVEC) has shown interest in building the bridge, and discussions between the prospective investors and the Tanzanian government are ongoing.

The project will involve a partnership with the private sector. The idea for the bridge was first introduced in 2020 by Tanzanians in the diaspora.
Although some have dismissed it as a dream, advancements in science and technology have shown that it is feasible with sufficient funding.
Tanzania has recently undertaken several ambitious construction projects, including the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Station, which is set to become the largest hydroelectric dam in East Africa.
Additionally, the country is working on the Dar es Salaam Rapid Transit System, a bus rapid transit system that aims to ease traffic congestion in the city.
