Tanzania has achieved a significant milestone in passport power, leaping seven positions in the 2023 Henley Passport Index to secure the 69th spot among the world’s most powerful passports. This notable advancement marks a significant improvement from its previous ranking of 76th in 2022.

The updated ranking reveals that Tanzanian passport holders now enjoy visa-free travel to an impressive 73 countries. This newfound access is a testament to Tanzania’s efforts in forging stronger diplomatic ties and enhancing its global standing.

The Henley Passport Index, which relies on exclusive and official data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), currently designates Singapore as the holder of the most powerful passport in the world.

Within the East African Community (EAC), Tanzania ranks behind Kenya, securing the 67th position with the ability to travel to 77 countries visa-free. Neighboring Malawi holds the 68th position, allowing its passport holders to travel to 75 countries without a visa.

On the African continent, South Africa boasts the most powerful passport, holding the 51st position globally, with visa-free access to 106 countries. Other EAC members also performed well, with Kenya and Tanzania showing promising improvements in their passport rankings.

Dr. Juerg Steffen, the chief executive of Henley & Partners, emphasized that countries with open-door visa policies can benefit from stronger economic ties and attract foreign investors seeking citizenship or residency through investment opportunities.

For entrepreneurs and businesspeople, having visa-free access to stable economies and key markets offers a pathway to lucrative jurisdictions and opportunities to expand their networks and partnerships.

Tanzania’s improved passport ranking has the potential to enhance its global outreach and attractiveness to foreign investors and travelers alike, opening doors for greater economic growth and collaboration on the international stage.
