Nigerian singer, Temilade Openiyi known by her stage name Tems, has made history by becoming the first Nigerian to bag an Oscar nomination after the song ‘Lift Me Up’ was nominated in the Best Original Song Category.

The singer was nominated for Best Original Song for her role in Lift Me Up, her collaboration with Rihanna.

Lift Me Up was one of the soundtracks to Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Rihanna co-wrote the energetic song with Tems, producer Ludwig Göransson and director Ryan Coogler.

Oscar

Understandably, this development makes the “Damage” singer the first Nigerian artist to receive an Oscar nomination.

All at the same time, the Dramedy 2022 received 11 nominations – the highest for the awards.

“The Banshees of Inisherin” and “All Quiet on the Western Front” followed, each with nine nominations.

The 95th edition of the event, also known as the Oscars, takes place at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.

It will be hosted by comedian and talk show host Jimmy Kimmel.

Since its release on October 28, 2022, “Lift Me Up” has topped most streaming charts, reaching number one in South Africa, Switzerland, Belgium and other countries. It also made the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Tems

Although they have received tremendous recognition in their craft with many prestigious awards and nominations, this is the first Oscar nomination for Tems and Rihanna.

Winners will be announced at the 95th Academy Awards held on March 12 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, California.
