A Texas man who was acquitted of a 2010 stabbing outside a bar after serving more than seven years in prison is now accused of shooting dead another man who was killed in a roadside violence incident.
Houston police said Lydell Grant, 46, and an unidentified woman were exiting a store around 11:50 p.m. Thursday when he drove over a stop sign and crashed into a Toyota.
Grant then allegedly got out of the car and fired several shots through the Toyota’s windshield before getting back in his car and driving away.
Toyota driver Edwin Arevalo, 33, was pronounced dead at the scene and Grant is now being held on $1million bail while he faces murder charges.
The suspect had previously been released from prison in 2019 for the murder of 28-year-old Aaron Scheerhoon, who was eventually found not guilty.

Grant was convicted of stabbing Scheerhoon outside a bar in Montrose in 2012 after six eyewitnesses to the stabbing two years earlier positively identified him as the attacker and testified against him in court.
Police said Scheerhoon was removed from the club, and witnesses told investigators they saw Grant stab him multiple times before he fled. Grant was convicted in 2012.
But he was released from prison in 2019 after nearly eight years after the Innocence Project of Texas analyzed DNA evidence found on the victim’s fingernails – which did not point to Grant as the perpetrator.
Police then arrested Jermaico Carter for Scheerhoon’s murder and tracked him as far away as Atlanta, Georgia, where he confessed to the murder.
Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg said in a statement at the time, “A district attorney’s greatest responsibility is to ensure that justice prevails, and making sure we have the right person is a primary responsibility.”
“We are relieved that Liddell’s wrongful conviction brought about this important breakthrough,” said Grant’s attorney Mike Weir, who also serves as Executive Director of the Innocence Project.
