Republican White House hopeful Donald Trump ignited controversy on Saturday by comparing himself to South African anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela, a move swiftly condemned by President Joe Biden’s campaign team.
The 77-year-old Trump, who faces indictment in four separate criminal cases, drew sharp criticism for his remarks, particularly given the gravity of the charges against him. Among these cases is one involving allegations of paying hush money to a former porn star prior to the 2016 presidential election, which he won over Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. With the trial set to commence on April 15 and a partial gag order imposed by Judge Juan Merchan, Trump took to his Truth Social platform to lash out at the judiciary.
Accusing Judge Merchan of violating his First Amendment rights, Trump boldly declared, “If this Partisan Hack wants to put me in the ‘clink’ for speaking the open and obvious TRUTH, I will gladly become a Moder-Day Nelson Mandela – It will be my GREAT HONOR.”

Nelson Mandela, revered worldwide for his lifelong struggle against apartheid, spent 27 years behind bars before assuming the presidency of South Africa. His comparison to Trump, who has previously likened himself to Mandela and Jesus Christ, sparked widespread backlash.
Biden’s campaign team swiftly condemned Trump’s comparison, highlighting what they characterized as a pattern of self-centered behavior. In a statement, Team Biden remarked, “Imagine being so self-centered that you compare yourself to Jesus Christ and Nelson Mandela all within the span of little more than a week: that’s Donald Trump for you.”
Trump’s remarks come amid mounting scrutiny over his legal troubles and aspirations for a potential presidential bid in the upcoming election. As the political landscape continues to evolve, Trump’s controversial statements are likely to remain a focal point of public debate and discourse.
