South African model and attorney Tshego Gaelae has made history by becoming the first Black woman to win the prestigious Mrs. World title. The 33-year-old was crowned at the 40th edition of the pageant, held in Las Vegas, USA, marking a significant moment in the competition’s history since its inception in 1984.
Gaelae’s victory saw Sri Lanka’s Ishadi Amanda take the first runner-up spot, while Thailand’s Ploy Panperm secured second place. Overwhelmed with gratitude, she took to Instagram to share her joy, writing: “To God be the glory. Thank you so much for the love and support, I am beyond grateful and elated! My beautiful South Africa, the crown is coming home.”

Beyond her success in the pageant world, Gaelae is an admitted attorney and currently works as a labour relations manager at a South African law firm. She is deeply committed to social causes, particularly advocating for women and children affected by domestic violence. Through her NGO, We Are Our Children’s Keepers, she provides essential school supplies—including shoes, uniforms, and stationery—to underprivileged children.
In addition to her legal and philanthropic work, Gaelae is also a digital content creator, collaborating with brands and educating her audience through My Lawyer’s Corner, a segment on her YouTube channel dedicated to legal awareness.
Her groundbreaking achievement adds to a remarkable year for African women in global pageantry. In 2024, Nigeria’s Chidimma Adetshina made history as the first Nigerian and West African to finish as the first runner-up at the Miss Universe competition, which took place in Mexico City in November.
With this victory, Gaelae’s reign as Mrs. World not only celebrates beauty but also amplifies the importance of empowerment and advocacy, making her an inspiration for women across the continent.
