Nine women have been sentenced to prison terms of up to 25 years in Tunisia for their involvement in the formation of a “terrorist” cell and the planning of the assassination of a minister since 2016.
Another seven defendants were sentenced to prison terms of between three and 14 years. And another face deportation, according to the same source.
The Tunisian Ministry of Justice announced on Thursday that the nine women were found guilty of forming a terrorist cell and plotting to assassinate a minister.
The court found that the women had planned to carry out a terrorist attack in the capital Tunis and had been in contact with a foreign terrorist organization. The court also found that the women had weapons and explosives.

The court sentenced the women to prison terms ranging from five to 25 years. The sentences were based on the severity of the crimes committed and the degree of involvement of each woman in the terrorist cell.
According to the private Tunisian radio station Mosaique FM, among the women sentenced is a neighbor of the minister’s parents, who are accused of disclosing information about his visits.
The Tunisian government has been cracking down on terrorism since the 2011 revolution. This case is the latest example of the government’s commitment to combating terrorism and ensuring the safety of its citizens.
