A 93-year-old South Carolina woman, Josephine Wright, found herself embroiled in a legal battle with developers over her family home, which has been in their possession since the Civil War. Tyler Perry, the renowned Hollywood figure, has stepped in to offer his assistance.
Bailey Point Investment Group initiated legal proceedings against Josephine Wright of Hilton Head Island in February, alleging that her property encroached on their land, caused a disturbance, and hindered their development plans. The investment group owns land on both sides of Wright’s 1.8-acre property, which they acquired in 2014. They attempted to purchase Wright’s property a few years ago, offering only $39,000.
In response, Wright filed a countersuit and enlisted the services of a civil rights attorney. Local media coverage of this ongoing dispute came to Tyler Perry’s attention in June. The renowned actor has committed to constructing a new five-bedroom home for Josephine Wright to replace her current residence.
This act of kindness comes after Wright lived in her Hilton Head home for 30 years and encountered various difficulties as the development project unfolded around her property. Charise Graves, Josephine Wright’s granddaughter, initiated a GoFundMe campaign to support her grandmother’s legal battle. Several other celebrities, including Fantasia, Meek Mill, Kyrie Irving of the Dallas Mavericks, and Snoop Dogg, contributed to the fundraising effort. Kyrie Irving even made a second donation after a tree fell on Wright’s house, damaging her roof in September.
Tyler Perry’s involvement and the contributions from these celebrities have had a significant impact on Josephine Wright’s life. Graves expressed her gratitude on social media, stating, “Tyler Perry’s friendship has made a significant difference in Grandma’s life, and we are truly thankful for his kindness and generosity.” Construction for the new house is expected to commence in the coming weeks, possibly in time for Ms. Wright’s 94th birthday.
