Former Chelsea and Newcastle striker, Christian Atsu has been found dead after being missing for several days following the earthquakes in Turkey.

Atsu, who played for Hatayspor before his tragic death, was one of the stars of Chelsea academy before going to Turkey. The 31-year-old lived in an apartment in Hatay that was badly damaged during the earthquake.

His club Hatayspor initially reported he was saved with ‘injuries’ but the situation changed after a day. They pinpointed Atsu’s exact location and found two pairs of his shoes, said Nana Sechere, who is an agent in Hatay.

The agent went on to say that thermal imaging cameras in the rubble showed signs of “up to five lives,” but it was not possible to confirm those signs.

He added that “things are going very slowly” and that they “urgently need more resources, including a translator”, adding that as a result “any rescue will be delayed and lives will be lost”.

Last week, Claire Rupio, Atsu’s partner, requested that equipment be sent to the collapsed building where he lived.

“It has been nine days since the earthquake and we still have not located Christian,” Sechere tweeted on Tuesday.

“I am at the quake site in Hatay with Christian’s family. The scenes are unimaginable and our hearts are broken for all the people affected.”

Atsu lived in a building with several of his Hatayspor employees and associates. The club’s sporting director, Tanner Savot, was also missing.

Some survivors are still being rescued after earthquakes and aftershocks in southern Turkey and northern Syria killed more than thousands.
