Brazilian football star Vinicius Jr. received a heartfelt tribute to his African ancestry on Tuesday before Brazil’s World Cup qualifying match against Uruguay, which ended in a 1-1 draw. The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) presented the 24-year-old forward with a certificate tracing his heritage to the Tikar ethnic group in Cameroon.

This special recognition was part of the Raízes de Ouro (“Golden Roots”) campaign, a collaborative initiative between the CBF and a genetic tracing organization aimed at uncovering the ancestral origins of Brazilian players. The certificate was presented to Vinicius by the CBF president, Ednaldo Rodrigues, alongside the player’s father, in a symbolic ceremony at the Fonte Nova Stadium.

The campaign underscores the critical role of Afro-Brazilian culture in shaping Brazil’s identity and achievements in global football. Rodrigues emphasized the broader significance of the initiative, saying, “To celebrate Vinicius Jr. is to celebrate the success of all Brazilians. By recognizing his roots, we affirm our commitment to an inclusive society and honor the profound contributions of Afro-Brazilian heritage to our national identity.”

Vinicius Jr., a standout forward for the Seleção, expressed pride in the discovery of his Cameroonian ancestry, adding depth to his identity as an Afro-Brazilian athlete.

Gina Paige, founder of AfricanAncestry.com, shared insights into the importance of this revelation: “Vinicius Jr.’s story reflects the erasure many individuals of African descent face due to the legacy of racism and slavery. Unveiling his Tikar ancestry is a powerful act of reconnection and resistance, aligning with his ongoing advocacy for social justice both on and off the pitch.”

The presentation ceremony was broadcast on the stadium’s giant screens, drawing cheers from fans who witnessed this unique acknowledgment of Vinicius Jr.’s heritage. The Raízes de Ouro campaign also took center stage during Brazil’s warm-up session, highlighting the country’s dedication to embracing its multicultural history.

As one of Brazil’s most celebrated football talents, Vinicius Jr. continues to be a symbol of resilience and pride. His newfound connection to his Cameroonian roots adds another chapter to his remarkable journey, both as an athlete and as a voice for equality and inclusion.
