In a disturbing incident at the Chinese owned Inner Galaxy Steel Company in Umuahala-Obuzor, Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State, Nigeria, a female crane operator, Ocheze Ogbonna, has reportedly been killed by a Chinese expatriate after rejecting his romantic advances.
Chris Nkwonta, the member representing Ukwa East/Ukwa West Federal Constituency of Abia State in the House of Representatives, disclosed that the Chinese national, employed at the same steel company, allegedly pushed Ogbonna off the crane she was operating, leading to her death.
This tragic event echoes a previous case involving another Chinese expatriate, Frank Geng Quarong, who was accused of murdering his Nigerian lover, Ummukulsum Sani Buhari, in Kano after she ended their relationship. Quarong had claimed to have spent over N60 million on Buhari during their two-year relationship, which included significant expenditures on property, business capital, luxury items, and educational expenses.
Reacting to Ogbonna’s death, Nkwonta expressed profound sorrow and condemned the alleged actions of the Chinese expatriate. He described the incident as a blatant abuse of human rights and a severe violation of the peaceful ethos of the Ukwa West Local Government Area.
“Miss Ocheze Ogbonna’s death orchestrated by a Chinese expatriate is a gross abuse of the rules of engagement and a total disregard for the sanctity of human life and an affront on their host community, Umuahala-Obuzor, and the peace-loving people of Ukwa West Local Government Area,” Nkwonta stated.

Nkwonta further highlighted the growing concerns among Nigerians regarding the behavior of Chinese expatriates in the country, emphasizing the need for immediate intervention to prevent future incidents. He called for justice for Ogbonna and urged relevant authorities to ensure that the perpetrator faces the full extent of the law.
“I strongly condemn the dastardly act and brutal killing of late Miss Ocheze Ogbonna by the Chinese expatriate who has been identified as Mr. Power. I hereby call on the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, the Abia State Commissioner of Police, CP, Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, the Honourable Minister of State, Labour and Productivity, Hon Barr. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), to ensure that the culprit, who I understand is being shielded by the security agents, is brought to book and made to face the full wrath of the law,” Nkwonta demanded in his statement.
This incident has sparked outrage and calls for increased scrutiny and regulation of foreign expatriates working in Nigeria, particularly concerning their interactions and treatment of local citizens.
