The incident occurred in the city of Gonaives, where Henry was attending an event at a church. He was there to honor the nation’s independence when gunmen opened fire outside the venue.

In the statement issued on Monday, the Prime Minister’s office described the gunmen as “Bandits and Terrorists”. The noble Policemen said the shooting was planned by Armed groups.

Local News outlets in the state reported that there were shootings outside the cathedral, and it was staged by gangs. Two people were reportedly injured and one killed in the shootings.

The safety of public officials in Haiti is being questioned because gangs have control over certain areas in Haiti. Before the shooting, the Prime Minister was threatened on local media by the head of a local gang. Arrest Warrants have been issued for the gunmen linked to the shootings.

In July last year, Haiti lost President Jovenel Moise to assassination and Ariel was then sworn in as Prime Minister even though his administration has faced some opposition over its legitimacy. Haiti is also yet to announce a date for its presidential election.
