Nigerian Billionaire, Mmobuosi, Set To Acquire English Club, Sheffield United, In £90m Deal

Nigerian billionaire Dozy Mmobuosi seals a deal to buy Sheffield United for around £90million amid the club’s latest transfer ban.

According to The Times, Mmobuosi is said to be in the final stages of buying club Bramall Lane. It is understood that a potential buyer would still have to pass the EFL Owners and Managers test, but so far “no problems have arisen”.

It had been known for some time that the Blades could be sold with the current owner, His Royal Highness Prince Abdullah bin Musaed bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, struggling to maintain the funding needed to keep the club running.

Last year, American businessman Henry Morris, who has previously been linked with a Newcastle takeover, made an offer believed to be in excess of £100m which the club’s hierarchy accepted.

But according to The Sheffield Star, Morris’ proposed takeover of the Blades fell through because of the complex financial structure he was trying to use to buy the Yorkshire club. It means Sheffield United are still looking for a new buyer and Mmobuosi is behind the offer.

Mmobuosi first made an impact on the world when he founded a company called Tingo Mobile PLC in Nigeria in 2001 and the organization has grown ever since. 

He then established his own foundation in 2021, which aims to “promote Africa’s progress and create an environment in which Africans can thrive”, with a focus on improving education, health and information technology development in his native Nigeria.
