Netflix Releases Groundbreaking African Animation Series ‘Supa Team 4,’ set in Zambia

Netflix took a significant stride in cultural diversity and representation by releasing its first African animation series titled “Supa Team 4.” 

The highly anticipated series, created by Zambian scriptwriter Malenga Mulendema, premiered on Thursday, making it a historic moment for African talent in the animation industry.

Set in a futuristic version of Zambia’s capital, Lusaka, “Supa Team 4” follows the journey of four teenage girls who are enlisted by a former secret agent to save the world from imminent peril. The show’s unique and captivating storyline is set to captivate audiences worldwide.

Speaking about the release, Malenga Mulendema expressed her excitement for the world to witness the incredible series produced by a talented team from Africa and beyond. 

She also hopes that “Supa Team 4” will pave the way for further investments and collaborations, fostering the growth of the African animation industry.

The project was brought to life through Malenga Mulendema’s success as one of the winners of the Triggerfish Story Lab initiative in 2015, a competition that scouted for talent across the African continent. 

With her dream to showcase Zambia as the backdrop for the series, she aims to inspire audiences worldwide and show that superheroes can emerge from any corner of the globe.

The series has already garnered attention and excitement from audiences, including Zambian rapper Sampa the Great, who contributed to the main theme tune and expressed enthusiasm on social media.

Netflix’s commitment to diversifying its content beyond the United States is evident through successful international shows such as Spain’s “La Casa de Papel” and South Korea’s “Squid Game.”

“Supa Team 4” marks a pivotal moment in African animation, and viewers worldwide are eager to embark on this thrilling adventure that celebrates the rich storytelling heritage of the African continent.
