Representing Fatima in court, her legal counsel, Malam Bulama, clarified that his client’s decision to sue her father was not out of disrespect but rather a means to protect her rights.

Bulama explained that Fatima’s father wanted her to marry a man from their village in Niger state, but she chose to live with her aunt to avoid the forced marriage.

In his defense, Aliyu Muhammad stated that his late parents had chosen the man for Fatima before their passing, and he felt obligated to honor their wishes. He also mentioned that he had successfully married off his other six daughters, who were now leading prosperous lives.

Aliyu attributed his daughter’s resistance to her mother’s influence and requested permission to consult with his community members on the matter.
