In an unexpected turn of events, Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars, faced a stunning defeat at the hands of Cape Verde during the opening match of the Cote d’Ivoire Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign on Sunday.

The Black Stars, considered a football powerhouse in Africa, were shocked with a 2-1 loss against Cape Verde at the Stade Félix-Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan. The defeat left supporters in bars across Accra in disbelief and disappointment.

“I’m in shock like, really Cape Verde won? It’s unimaginable,” expressed David, a fan who witnessed the unexpected outcome.

Another disappointed supporter commented, “I was quite disappointed. Looking at Ghana, which is a football country, we expect more from the Ghanaian team.”

The weaknesses in Ghana’s defense became apparent early in the match, with Cape Verde’s Jamiro Monteiro scoring the team’s first goal in the 17th minute. Despite the early setback, Ghanaians remained optimistic, especially after Alexander Djiku equalized in the 56th minute.

Supporters in fanzones rejoiced at the equalizing goal, but their hopes were dashed when Cape Verde scored a dramatic stoppage-time goal, securing a 2-1 victory and placing them at the top of Group B.

With the defeat, Black Stars fans are now hoping for a stronger performance in the upcoming match against Egypt on Thursday, January 18. Egypt, the runner-up of the previous AFCON edition, faced a 2-2 draw against Mozambique on the same day as Ghana’s loss.

The Ghanaian team is under pressure to recover from this setback and regain momentum in the tournament. Fans are eagerly anticipating the match against Egypt, with the hope that the Black Stars will bounce back and demonstrate the football prowess that has made Ghana a force to be reckoned with in the African football scene.
