In a significant shift for Nigerian football star Asisat Oshoala, the Super Falcons forward is bidding farewell to FC Barcelona Femini after an impactful five-year stint in Spain. The 29-year-old is poised for a move to the United States, marking a new chapter in her illustrious career.

Despite her remarkable contributions, Oshoala has faced challenges securing a spot in Barcelona’s starting lineup this season, with just four starts in 14 appearances for the La Liga champions. FC Barcelona has reportedly accepted a transfer fee of €150,000 from the United States National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) team, Bay FC, signaling Oshoala’s transition across the Atlantic.

An official announcement of the move is expected later this week. The reigning Africa Footballer of the Year is believed to have agreed to a contract extension through 2026, with an option for 2027. Bay FC, making its NWSL debut in 2024, will call PayPal Park in San Jose, California, their home ground and is set to face Angel City on March 17 in their inaugural NWSL campaign.

Oshoala’s departure from Barcelona marks the end of a highly successful period since her arrival in January 2019 from the Chinese club Dalian Quanjian.

The six-time CAF Women’s Player of the Year winner achieved significant milestones during her time with Barcelona, including four Primera División titles, three Supercopa de España Femenina honors, and three Copa de la Reina titles.

Notably, Oshoala made history as the first African to win the UEFA Women’s Champions League with Barcelona in 2021 and repeated that success in 2023. Her impact on and off the field has solidified her status as one of Africa’s football icons.
