Acclaimed Nigerian singer and songwriter, Bukola Elemide — known to the world as Aṣa — has been selected as one of Yale University’s 2025 World Fellows, a prestigious leadership programme that brings together an elite group of global visionaries for a transformative fellowship experience.
The Yale World Fellows initiative, now in its 23rd year, is a hallmark of the university’s commitment to nurturing bold leadership across borders. Each year, only 16 individuals are chosen from a competitive pool of applicants worldwide. Fellows are selected not only for their accomplishments but for their potential to drive change in their fields and communities.
Aṣa’s selection is particularly noteworthy. While she has long captivated audiences with her soulful music and thought-provoking lyrics, this new recognition celebrates her broader influence beyond the stage — as a cultural ambassador, social voice, and creative force. It marks her transition into a global leadership space that values not just intellect, but the power of art to spark dialogue and shape society.
The fellowship, hosted by Yale’s International Leadership Centre, spans four months of academic immersion, collaboration, and leadership development. It is designed to empower professionals working on the frontlines of change — in governance, activism, innovation, and justice — with fresh perspectives and strategic tools.

Emma Sky, Director of the Yale International Leadership Centre, described the 2025 Fellows as individuals “operating with remarkable savvy and often immense courage.” She added, “In a time where the world feels increasingly fragmented, these leaders are choosing hope, imagination, and action.”
Joining Aṣa in the 2025 cohort are notable figures such as Amna Baig, a senior police officer in Pakistan; Tamar Chugoshvili, a Georgian democracy advocate; and Mikhail Zygar, a Russian journalist and media entrepreneur. The class also includes tech founders, human rights defenders, educators, and sustainability champions — a true cross-section of today’s changemakers.
Since its inception in 2002, the Yale World Fellows Programme has welcomed over 400 individuals from more than 100 countries, building a diverse and influential network of alumni. Aṣa’s inclusion not only brings a fresh artistic perspective to the table but also serves as an inspiring nod to the role of African creatives in global conversations about progress and leadership.
As she prepares to take on this new journey, many fans and admirers are celebrating not just her music, but her growing impact as a global voice for resilience, authenticity, and purpose.
