Zambia’s Barbra Banda has been crowned the 2024 CAF Women’s Player of the Year, marking a historic milestone as the first Zambian to ever receive the prestigious honor. The announcement came during the star-studded CAF Awards ceremony held in Marrakech, Morocco, on Monday. Banda’s remarkable performances on both the domestic and international stage earned her the accolade, defeating Nigeria’s Chiamaka Nnadozie, who finished as runner-up.
Banda’s achievements in 2024 have been nothing short of extraordinary. As captain of the Zambia Women’s National Team, she led her nation to global recognition with record-breaking performances. At the Paris 2024 Olympics, Banda etched her name in the history books by scoring a hat-trick for Zambia, setting an Olympic record for the most hat-tricks in women’s football.
Her excellence extended to club football as well. Playing for Orlando Pride in the U.S.-based National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), Banda was instrumental in helping her team secure both the NWSL Shield and the NWSL Championship. Her decisive goal in the final against Washington Spirit sealed the title, further solidifying her reputation as one of the game’s most clutch players.
Banda’s stellar form also earned her a spot in the CAF/FIFPRO Africa XI for 2024 and another groundbreaking achievement as the first African player to be included in the FIFPRO Women’s World XI for 2024.

Speaking on her victory, Banda expressed gratitude for the recognition, stating, “This award isn’t just for me; it’s for every young girl in Zambia and across Africa who dreams of achieving greatness in football. It’s proof that anything is possible with hard work and belief.”
While Banda took the top honor, Nigeria’s Chiamaka Nnadozie also had a night to celebrate. The Super Falcons goalkeeper, widely regarded as one of the best in the world, finished as runner-up for the Women’s Player of the Year Award. Her outstanding performances, particularly during the FIFA Women’s World Cup and other key tournaments, earned her widespread acclaim.
Nnadozie did not leave the ceremony empty-handed, however. She successfully defended her CAF Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year title, reaffirming her status as Africa’s finest in her position. Her leadership and crucial saves have been vital to the success of both her club and country.
The 2024 CAF Awards celebrated not only individual excellence but also the growing prominence of women’s football in Africa. Barbra Banda’s triumph underscores the continent’s immense talent, while players like Chiamaka Nnadozie continue to inspire future generations.
With her record-breaking achievements and history-making award, Banda has set a new benchmark for African women in football, proving that the continent’s stars can shine brightly on the global stage.
