Best Female Athletes in Africa

Football is the most popular sports in Africa that we often forget that there are other sports that Africans are good at- athletics.  We have seen many female champions grace many tracks around the world. We have listed some of these female athletes who have done us noble in their career pursuit.

Caster Semenya- South Africa

Caster Semenya is a South African double Olympic champion and triple world champion and has won the gold medal.

Isabelle Sambou -Senegal

Isabelle-Sambou is a Senegalese freestyle wrestler and a nine-time gold medalist, a four-time silver medalist and won the bronze medal. She was crowned as 2015’s “African Wrestler of the Decade” by the World Wrestling Union (WWU).

Maria Lourdes Mutola -Mozambique

Maria de Lurdes Mutola is a Mozambican athlete who specialized in distance races. She was referred to as the  “Maputo Express”,  and was the only Mozambican athlete in history, including both men and women, to have won a world or Olympic title.

Kirsty Leigh Coventry -Zimbabwe

Kirsty Leigh is a Zimbabwean swimmer who was famous for her backstroke skills. She was the first person to win the Olympic medal in her country and ended up winning several world titles and awards. She referred to as the country’s national treasure and golden girl.

Tirunesh Dibaba -Ethiopia

Tirunesh Dibaba is an Ethiopian cross-country racer. She won three Olympic medals, five world championships on track and also won four cross-country championship titles.  She achieved the double in championship titles and went on to win many titles.

Françoise Mbango- Cameroon

Francoise Mbango is a Cameroonian athlete who was good at triple jump. Mbango is only Cameroonian athlete in history to have won a world or Olympic title.

Meseret Defar- Ethiopia

Meseret Defar is an Ethiopian athlete specialized in long-distance running. Defar won the  Olympic champion of the 5,000 meters,  bronze medal, and a four-time champion on the 3000m indoor track. She also  won a silver and two bronze medals and two silver medals. She broke the world record of  5000m by scoring 14 min 24.s 53.

Derartu Tulu- Ethiopia

Derartu Tulu is a legend in long-distance running, cross country running, road running, and the marathon distance. She was the first African, black female athlete to win an Olympic title.
