Acclaimed actor Denzel Washington has received the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States, in a ceremony hosted by President Joe Biden at the White House. Washington was among 19 distinguished individuals recognized for their exceptional contributions to society, spanning fields such as entertainment, politics, sports, and humanitarian efforts.
The medal is awarded to individuals who have made “exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public, or private endeavors.”
Denzel Washington, celebrated for his profound impact on film and philanthropy, joined notable honorees, including U2 frontman Bono, known for his activism against poverty and support for HIV/AIDS relief, and celebrity chef José Andrés, founder of the World Central Kitchen disaster relief organization.
The ceremony also honored influential figures such as Dame Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of Vogue; Dame Jane Goodall, a globally renowned primatologist; actor and Parkinson’s advocate Michael J. Fox; and Argentine soccer icon Lionel Messi. Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was also among those recognized.

“For the final time as president, I have the honor of bestowing the Medal of Freedom, our nation’s highest civilian honor, on a group of extraordinary individuals who have shaped the culture and the cause of America,” said President Biden. “To each of you, thank you for your sacred efforts to better this country and the world.”
Washington’s accolade adds to a celebrated career that spans decades, marked by iconic performances in films such as Malcolm X, Training Day, and Fences. Beyond the screen, he has dedicated himself to various philanthropic initiatives, including educational programs and support for underserved communities.
The ceremony also highlighted Bono’s extensive humanitarian work, including recognition as Time Magazine’s Person of the Year in 2005 and his honorary British knighthood in 2007. His band, U2, is currently performing at the innovative Sphere venue in Las Vegas, showcasing a reimagined collection of their greatest hits.
