The 66th summit of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has officially begun in Abuja, Nigeria, under the chairmanship of Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The gathering comes at a critical time for the region, with key member states Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger absent from the discussions.

The three nations, all of which have recently experienced military coups, have cut ties with ECOWAS, accusing the bloc of imposing sanctions they consider unjust. This strained relationship underscores the challenges facing the organization as it seeks to uphold democratic governance and stability in West Africa.

A highlight of the summit is the report by Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who led mediation efforts with Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso during the previous ECOWAS meeting. Leaders are expected to delve into pressing issues such as regional security threats, compliance with the payment of the community levy, and the implementation of the ECOWAS trade liberalization scheme, which promotes free movement of goods and people across member states.ECOWAS 66th Summit Commences in Abuja With Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger Absent

Founded in 1975, ECOWAS has grown into West Africa’s primary political and economic bloc, representing around a dozen nations, including Ghana, Ivory Coast, Benin, and The Gambia. With Nigeria currently at the helm, the organization faces heightened responsibilities in addressing the wave of coups and insecurity destabilizing the region.

The summit also highlights the need for unity and cooperation among member states as ECOWAS continues to grapple with the delicate balance of fostering regional integration while navigating political and security challenges. As discussions progress, member states aim to reinforce their commitment to the bloc’s vision of stability and economic growth for the region
